Nintendo DS News

The Ninja will only reach the US.
17/05/2008 21:33:35
For those 360 gamers out there you might have had the pleasure of playing N+
Well the next step for the much loved ninja is the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
When I heard this news, I wet myself with joy. However all was not great.
Living in the UK I have come to terms with the month  later releases in comparison to the US, I understand the amount of translation which is needed for other europian countries.
But when I heard this news, I wet myself with sadness. N+ is only coming to the US.
I don't have a clue why, no-one does.
Just looks like us "foreigners" will have to import this potentially epic title.

Dr Kawashima says no to $11 million in royalties
05/02/2008 20:10:43
We all know Brain Age, the mind frazzling DS series by smarty-pants Ryuta Kawashima. Well know he reveals he would much rather be working than accepting 11 million US dollars for his best-selling series.

"Not a single yen has gone in my pocket" remarked Kawashima to the AFP in a recent interview.

Because of agreement terms with his employer, Tohoku University, Kawashima was entitles to half of the Brain Age royalties personally. Rather than go out and get loaded with the latest clothes and cars, he decided to use the funds in a $6.5million project on Tohoku Uni's campus.

"My hobby is work" he says. "Everyone in my family is mad at me but I tell them that if they want money, go out and earn it."

Kawashima is currently working on afour-year project to study brain development in children. He's also working closely with Toyota to develop a car designed to keep elderly drivers alert.

(US) Cobalt/Black DS Lite: Coming Soon to a Store Near You
04/02/2008 23:52:53
That's right, US gamers are getting another new DS color on February 10th. It's the 7th color to come to the US, which makes the list of colors as follows:
  • Polar White
  • Coral Pink
  • Onyx
  • Crimson/Black
  • Limited Edition Zelda Triforce Gold
  • Limited Edition Nintendogs Metallic Rose
  • Cobalt/Black
Personally, I don't find this to be the most attractive DS Lite model yet, but that's just my opinion.

Iwata: No new Nintendo DS. No DS Phone
04/11/2007 02:16:13
In a recently interview, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata made a clear statement about the rumors of a New Nintendo DS and a Nintendo DS Phone.

Iwata : "DS is a single-architecture platform with this huge installedbase that can be used by virtually anyone. This can be not comparedwith any other machine in the past, so it would be a shame if we couldnot use it as an infrastructure for something else. However, to do someans that Nintendo has to invent a new business model, which isdifferent from the way Nintendo was selling ROM cartridges and askingour software makers to make software, and from how we were producingthem and software publishers were selling them. So, we need some timebefore we move to that kind or development. We will definitely need toprepare for connection points and all that.

So, I cannot dwellon the details today, but many people have already suggested suchideas, and if you can just imagine that something interesting mighthappen whenever you bring your DS to a train station or theme park ormuseum, you know that there are enormous possibilities here. We arehopeful that we will be able to show you some concrete examples nextyear."

In a later quote, Iwata clarifies the position regarding a new DS next year.

"WhenI referred to the next year's developments for DS, I was not talkingabout any new hardware launch, of course. As I just emphasized theimportance of the great installed base of DS and the advantage thatnothing in the past had this installed base with a single architecture,we could not leverage that if we introduced new hardware.

So,what we were hinting about must be new services that we can offer withthe existing hardware. With that as the premise, we would like toestablish a circumstance where people can find new joy in carryingaround DS all the time. Such services should contribute to making DS anactively used hardware and, also, to make the leap from one DS perhousehold to one DS per individual."

DS As A Phone
Iwata,"So, I cannot imagine that, in the future, a single portable devicewill be able to provide every need for all the daily issues peoplehave, and I do not share a vision that DS has to be merged with cellphones in the future. Of course, we do not know how cell-phonetechnologies will evolve and what kind of business structure willemerge in the future. I cannot say with 100% assurance that Nintendo'sfuture will never intersect with that of the phone business. But as faras the structure of today's phone business is concerned, Nintendo doesnot have much interest."

RUMOUR: Metroid Prime 3 Hinting at a New DS Metroid?
28/08/2007 23:06:13
First of all, I have a very important question for you. What the hell are you doing reading this while you could be playing Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the perfection of all that is Wii? Still with me? Right...I guess you're too lame to be playing Corruption.

Anyway, for those who have had the luck of acquiring a copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, I'd like to advise that they check this out for themselves.

Now, to the rumour.

As you can see from the above image, it seems Retro has taken to teasing us about the possibility of a Metroid two-dimensional adventure on the Nintendo DS. Yes, Metroid Dread, which would be the 5th installment on the long-running series (Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 are separate, says Nintendo), is apparently nearing completion so that should have it on Nintendo's announcements soon.

Yes, there is the possibility that this was an accidental tease from Retro and it was just meant to tell us about Metroid experiments, but it is not mentioned anywhere else on the game.

Still, take this with a grain of salt. Samus hopefuls should not totally discard the idea of a new 2D Metroid, though, seeing as how Nintendo released Fusion on the Game Boy Advanced. Here's to Metroid Dread *gulp*.

First Sonic Rush Adventure Trailer
25/08/2007 05:52:55
Well, not much to say. The sequel to Sonic's great DS game, Sonic Rush, is coming out soon, but this is still the first trailer to be shown.

Mistwalker's DS RPG Gets Official Site and More
14/08/2007 02:25:18
For a while, Mistwalker has been occasionally dropping references to their in-production DS RPG Epic. It wasn't until today, though, that we finally got some concrete infromation.

From the makers of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey (both to come to Xbox 360 this holidays) comes Archaic Seal Heat. Nintendo Japan has decided to help with the hype and launched an official website for Archaic Seal Heat which finally reveals some information.

Then, Famitsu got some screens of the game. Pay close attention to these, as you will hardly believe your eyes when you can see what Mistwalker managed to do for custcenes.

Final Fantasy's daddy, Hironobu Sakiguchi, heads up the creation this strategy role-playing game which uses the Nintendo DS's bottom screen for control and gameplay while the top screen shows full-motion video of the action. Final Fantasy-founding musician Nobuo Uematsu sits this Mistwalker game out, and Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics) steps up to take charge of the musical score.

Archaic Seal Heat releases on October 4th in Japan. No word yet on an American or European release, though, judging by Mistwalker's track record, it'll surely come sometime next year.

Tingle RPG Gets a European Release
03/08/2007 20:41:23
Last year, just around the time when hell froze over, Nintendo announced that Tingle, that elf-thing from The Legend of Zelda, would get its own game released that year. The game was released and it was a mild hit but hopes of an overseas release were close to none.

Amazingly, Nintendo of Europe just announced they'd be releasing Tingle RPG on their territory with the new name Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. The name is not the most bizarre thing of the game, though, as you can see on any of the screenshots.

"Players romp through the game's world as the money-grubbing dude in a creepy costume, performing tasks for the villagers to earn precious rupees. Earn enough of these gems and you can toss them into a magical pond where you'll visit the paradise known as Rupeeland. Map-making and haggling, two of Tingle's favorite pastimes, will be the frequent and standard fare during the adventure."

European players can scar themselves for life on September 14th of this year 2007. No American release is expected as of this writing.

Square Enix Confirms Dragon Quest Remakes in the Works for DS
30/07/2007 21:37:00
The Dragon Quest series isn't as huge in the US and Europe as it is in Japan. Only a handful of games from the series has been released in either countries. But now, Square Enix is fixing that problem by remaking three of the original SNES classics for the DS. The only one to reach it to the states was Dragon Quest IV, while Europe hasn't gotten a single game from the main Dragon Quest series until early 2006, so these three titles will most definitely bring a brand new experience to those new to the series.

A small look at logos, character art, and small screenshots were shown in a recent Japanese magazine, scans shown below. The remake of the fourth Dragon Quest is set for a "Winter 2007" release, while the other two are set as "TBA". All the remakes are being worked on by Artepiazza, the guys behind the upcoming Opoona for the Wii.

Be on the lookout for these three titles, as well as the ninth installment of the series, Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky, and the highly anticipated spin-off, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. Be sure to stay with Nintendo-Play for future updates. Cool

Viva Pinata DS Announced
30/07/2007 18:19:30
Viva Piñata, a game revolving around caring for a garden to have piñatas come, live there, reproduce with other piñatas, and finally, have a perfect garden, was announced yesterday to be set for the Nintendo DS.

No one expected it. After all, Rare owns the game's rights and Rare belongs to MicroSoft, so why would it ever release on a rival gaming machine? We'll leave you to ponder that while we get some more details.

The game will be based on the original concept (that is NO Viva Piñata: Party Animals), something which is definitely a relief since the DS has enough mini-game collections already without counting the upcoming flood. Viva Piñata DS will also have a top-down view, and the game will obviously have a new control method.

We hope the DS versions sells a lot better. Though sales of the original were quite disappointing, in my experience, nothing beats seeing a piñata smack another one.
